Our Plan:

Leelanau County and more specifically, Leelanau Township have long been ignored when it comes to high speed internet service. ConnectLeelanau aims to fix that once and for all. ConnectLeelanau is a community based partnership with COLI Inc., to bring high speed internet service to all of those in Leelanau Township. It is 100% privately owned and funded, but still has the goal to privide low cost, high quality, and high speed internet service to all that want to have it in Leelanau Township. The plan has three stages:

Stage 1: (Completion by October 1, 2008)

  • Connect anyone who has a view of Grand Traverse Bay with COLI's Advanced wireless towers on the east side of the bay.
  • Construct a WiFi Network throughout the Village of Northport for hotspot style access in town.
  • Deploy an advanced non-line-of-sight network for those who need a high end connection. Mostly for businesses, but some residences that cannot get the WiFi may also choose to use this service.
  • Deploy several new small towers around the township to cover more remote groupings of people. Like Cathead Bay and Christmas Cove.
  • Develop a free messageboard system for users of ConnectLeelanau to facilitate communication amongst those within Leelanau Towhship. (We will need moderators for this, please contact us if you are interested.)

Stage 2: (Completion by December, 2008)

  • Introduce free service for low-income households.

Stage 3: (Not complete until everyone gets service)

  • Do whatever we can to find ways for everyone in Leelanau Township that wants to have service to be able to get service.
